Wish-Bone® began its journey in 1945 when World War II veteran Phillip Sollomi opened a family-style chicken restaurant in Kansas City, Missouri. Named “The Wish-Bone,” the restaurant quickly became a local favorite. In 1948, the brand found its true calling with the debut of Phil’s mother’s Italian dressing recipe, brought from her native Sicily. This authentic recipe became an instant hit, laying the foundation for the iconic Wish-Bone® brand.

The Original Italian Dressing

Phil Sollomi’s Italian dressing was so popular that he began producing it in 50-gallon drums to meet demand. Bottled with his mother’s distinctive label, "THE KANSAS CITY WISH-BONE FAMOUS ITALIAN-STYLE DRESSING," the dressing captured the hearts of customers across the heartland. Its unique blend of authentic ingredients and bold flavors set it apart, making it a household favorite.

Expansion and Commitment to Quality

In 1957, TJ Lipton purchased the Wish-Bone® business, helping the brand grow and reach even more customers.
