Understanding Fiber
Avocado, Blueberry, Brocolli, Potato, Bell pepper, Orange, Banana and A wide variety of nuts
Generally, fiber is a diverse group of compounds including plant, animal, or commercially produced carbohydrates that are resistant to digestion by human enzymes. Fibers can be naturally occurring in plant foods, or in some cases, isolated, extracted, and purified, or manufactured for use in supplements and fortified foods. 3 There are several different types of fiber characterized by differences in solubility, viscosity, and fermentability. Differences in these characteristics impact the effects fiber has in the body. 4

Soluble fibers dissolve in water and can be found in foods such as oats, beans, and fruits. There are also insoluble fibers that do not dissolve in water, while viscous fibers thicken when mixed with fluids. 5 Fermentable fibers, on the other hand, can serve as food for the friendly bacteria residing in the gastrointestinal tract (GI) and are also referred to as prebiotic fiber. Wheat dextrin is a soluble, fermentable fiber that provides prebiotic benefits to help support a healthy gut. †

In order to get all of the various benefits of fiber, it is important to eat a wide variety of fiber-rich foods, and consider supplements when needed to fill any gaps.

Fact: Fiber is widely recognized as an important part of a healthy diet. However, many adults are not getting the recommended amounts of fiber on a daily basis.
Recommended adequate intake ( AI ) per day Male 50 years 30g, Females 50 years 21 g. Mean dietary fiber consumption per day Males 50 years 18 g - 19 g. Females 50 years 15 g - 16 g

Fiber Tips

  • Incorporating good sources of fiber such as whole grains into your diet helps move food through the digestive tract which is very important for colon health. † But be sure to drink plenty of water when increasing fiber consumption!
  • People are becoming increasingly familiar with probiotics, but the term prebiotics is less readily understood. Prebiotics can also serve as food for probiotics. By nourishing the friendly microbes in the GI tract, prebiotics have the potential to provide many health benefits. †
  • Kirkland Signature Optifiber™ provides wheat dextrin, a type of soluble fiber with recognized prebiotic effects to support a healthy digestive system. †
